Game Jam: Florentine
Updated: Oct 23, 2019
Over the summer I was a part of an unofficial Game Jam. I got together with four other Fitchburg State students, and this is what we came up with - Florentine!
What is Florentine?
Florentine is a 2D platforming defense game, where you defend towns and power crystals from mythical enemies coming from different dimensions. Dimension swapping is visualized with the Blue and Red backgrounds, allowing you to only damage certain enemies in their home dimension.
This Game Jam marked an important moment for me. I'm used to being mentored in situations like the Reality Virtually Hackathon, but here I was the mentor. I'm used to helping out other students when I can, but this was at a whole other level. Two of the four other game designers had never built a game before and they didn't know their interests. As I worked on what I normally do, Level Design, Gameplay Design & UI; I helped them find what they were interested in, what was cool to them. I then taught and gave them tools to realize their interests, helping as they had questions, but generally letting them build their ideas. They left the Game Jam with confidence, happy with what they had done and ready to get back into designing.
